GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision assists senior staff with the preparation and testing of a variety of complex cardiac diagnostic procedures. Prepares and operates specialized cardiac monitoring equipment. Provides health screening, patient motivation, cardiac rehabilitation sessions, therapeutic treatment, and education for patients. Under the immediate direction of the manager and medical director, and with minimal daily supervision, responsible for planning, coordinating, instructing and monitoring the clinical weight management program services to small groups and individuals. Participates in the development and implementation of individual weight loss plans, and record keeping processes.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists physicians/Ph.D.’s with the preparation and execution of a variety of complex cardiac diagnostic procedures; including cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Includes form completion and data entry as necessary.

2. Obtains comprehensive medical history including risk factor stratification, medication list, and patient’s symptoms. Obtains signed consent for cardiac rehabilitation and stress testing services. Provides program and discharge instructions to patients.

3. Assesses and prepares patient for noninvasive testing. This could include the review of lab results, accuracy of physician order, and patient status. Determines proper location of electrodes, prepares skin for placement and attaches electrodes.

4. Completes daily calibration of the indirect calorimeter and troubleshoots as necessary.

5. Obtains vital signs, blood glucose, and electrocardiograms as needed during various procedures. Monitors for any abnormalities pre-procedure, during procedure, and post-procedure. Communicates medical concerns directly to the patient’s physician.

6. Implements appropriate emergency care according to ACLS protocol and standing orders; including administration of Aspirin and Nitroglycerine as clinically indicated.

7. Assesses and then individualizes cardiac rehabilitation program for all Phase II and Phase III cardiac patients, including patients with complex etiologies, mechanical ventricular assist devices, bariatric patients, cancer patients, and pre- and post- heart transplant patients. Performs exercise tolerance tests for all of the above cardiac patients. Generates exercise prescriptions, develops, revises, and follows through on individual treatment plans, and supervises exercise sessions. Provides, plans, evaluates patient progress and provides feedback to the referring physician throughout the rehabilitative program or as often as needed.

8. Conducts individual and group educational sessions pertaining to cardiology/risk factor management topics.

9. Replenishes supplies and cleans equipment at the end of each shift.

10. Provides individual or small group counseling related to clinical weight management using a variety of behavioral techniques (e.g., motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral).

11. Obtains comprehensive general and weight-related medical history.

12. Records assessments, interventions and patient status in medical record.

13. Directs, instructs, and educates patients in all phases of the clinical weight management program.

14. Communicates with physicians, medical director and mid-level practitioners as needed to direct medical care of patients.

15. Evaluates patient progress and revises treatment plans accordingly.

16. Serves as a resource and acts as a consultant by sharing professional educational expertise with hospital personnel and outside clients with contracts. Participates on hospital committees as a representative of the department as requested.

17. Prepares a variety of recurring and special reports, logs and comparative data.

18. Refers patients to behavioral health services as indicated.

19. Communicates and coaches patients between classes via telephone and/or email.

20. Performs clinical evaluations (metabolic rate, body mass index, waist measurements, body composition) on individuals (patients and community members) as needed.

21. Conducts informational sessions for prospective new clients.

22. Attends seminars and meetings in order to maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field.

23. Other duties as assigned.

24. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Integrity/ Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Physiology/Science or Biomedical field.
  • Six months experience in a cardiac or similar clinical setting.
  • Mandatory Competency exam completion and pass.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
  • Current BLS-C required and Advanced Cardiac life Support Certification (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire.
  • ACSM Certification as Clinical Exercise Specialist or Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP) preferred.
