Director - Pharmacy Services - Henry Ford Allegiance Health - Jackson, MI
GENERAL SUMMARY:
This individual reports to the Vice President – Pharmacy Services HFHS and has overall responsibility for assuring pharmacy services within the hospital meet organizational objectives and patient care needs. The director provides guidance and direction in planning, organizing and supervising activities of the members of his/her management team and, through them, all members of the hospital’s pharmacy staff. At the Health System level, this individual assists in conceptualizing, implementing and evaluating models of practice that improve the quality and economy of pharmacy services and in developing and implementing pharmacy policies, procedures and processes that assure patients receive drug therapy that is safe, effective and as economic as possible.
- Works with colleagues in medicine, nursing and other disciplines and with hospital and health system administration as necessary and appropriate to assure pharmacy services are meeting institutional needs and expectations. Uses surveys of internal and external customers to identify service areas where improvement efforts need to be focused and to document change over time.
- Assists in the development of system-wide policies, procedures and processes that promote safe, effective and economic medication use, are consistent with national standards of practice, and assure compliance with accreditation standards and with state and federal regulations. Assumes overall responsibility for implementation of these policies, procedures and processes at his/her institution.
- Effectively manages the processes needed to successfully recruit, hire, and orient qualified pharmacy personnel. Assures that required licensure and/or certifications are current and valid for all members of the staff, and that mechanisms necessary for staff development and continued competency are in place.
- Provides for the preparation and distribution of work assignments and schedules. Uses workload statistics, trends and projections to effectively and efficiently deploy available staff to meet patient care needs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Develops and implements processes necessary to ensure bi-weekly payroll data is accurate, complete and timely.
- Provides for supervision and evaluation of pharmacy staff. Counsels staff regarding performance deficiencies in a professional and timely manner as needed. Interprets and administers personnel policies and may discharge a staff member for cause as following established HR policy and procedure.
- Plans and provides necessary oversight for the construction of physical facilities and for the purchase or development and implementation of computer and related automated systems needed to support pharmacy services. Ensures that department is clean, neat, well organized and properly maintained. Assures that pharmacy staff have all tools necessary to properly carry out their responsibilities.
- Establishes and maintains strict controls and accountability for all medications stored in the hospital and affiliated clinics and dispensed or administered to patients. Monitors and modifies drug acquisition processes as necessary to prevent significant inventory build. Ensures that organizational billing procedures are followed and that patient billing is accurate.
- Develops and recommends an annual budget. Establishes appropriate budgetary controls and prepares periodic reports of fiscal performance relative to budget as necessary or requested.
- Creates and maintains an environment which supports undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate training programs in pharmacy practice. Coordinates activities, as appropriate, with educators from outside colleges or universities.
- Creates and maintains an environment which supports pharmaceutical research helpful to organizational efforts to improve pharmacy services and patient care over time.
- Performs duties and responsibilities of subordinate staff in their absence as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Must be licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Michigan. Must have obtained an advanced degree (post BS Pharm.D., MS, MBA or equivalent), completed a residency program approved by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a fellowship in pharmacy, or have demonstrated a similar level of achievement in the practice of hospital pharmacy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must have demonstrated leadership ability in working with and coordinating the activities of others in developing improved patient care services.
- Must demonstrate verbal and written communication skills which enable him/her to contribute effectively in the dissemination of information to all levels of health care personnel in the institution. He/she should likewise demonstrate a desire to contribute to the pharmaceutical literature.
- Must have a strong background in all areas of progressive hospital pharmacy practice.
- Must have a previous work history of reliability, dependability and progressively increasing levels of organizational responsibility.
- Must be able to work with pharmacy students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.
- Should have completed research which demonstrates originality and investigative ability in an area of pharmacy practice. The work should be suitable for publication in the pharmaceutical or medical literature.
