GENERAL SUMMARY: 
  • Under the supervision of the primary physician and/or the Division Head, elicits patient history, provides counseling and follow-up care for the following patient groups: prenatal, pediatric, adult cancer, general genetics, adult and pediatric neurogenetics. 
  • Prepares cases and presents at interdisciplinary conferences. 
  • Formulates differential diagnosis, coordinates related testing, and documents all patient visits. 
  • Counsels patients on all aspects of the diagnosis. 
  • Consults on inpatient cases and acts as liaison with a variety of internal and external sources. 
  • Provides support for students and residents, education of professional and lay groups, and participation in departmental research. 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Clinical responsibilities 
  • Elicit pertinent medical, pregnancy, developmental social and family history. 
  • Analyze and interpret medical history, formulate differential diagnoses, risk assessments, and calculate genetic or teratogenic risks. 
  • Search and interpret the medical literature and computerized databases, such as REPROTOX, CancerGene, GeneClinics, OMIM, POSSUM, and formulate initial putative differential diagnoses and care/treatment plans. 
  • Prepare clinical information about new and return patients for presentation at weekly clinic case conferences. 
  • Determine and coordinate clinical genetic testing to confirm diagnoses. Critically analyze laboratory methodologies and detection rates. 
  • Counsel patients about genetic and medical information and laboratory results, including the diagnosis, etiology, natural history, prognosis, and treatment/management of their conditions. 
  • Explain the technical and medical aspects of diagnostic and screening testing methods. Communicate and explain normal and abnormal test results to patients, their families, and referring and ancillary physicians. 
  • Write and edit letters to the patient and/or the referring physician documenting the patient’s visit, including medical history, family history, physical examination, counseling information, clinical impression, care/treatment plan and recommendations. 
  • Obtain insurance authorization for genetic and medical testing, write letters of medical necessity, and provide appropriate documentation to third party payers to determine insurance coverage. 
  • Obtain informed consent from patients. 
  • Identify and access regional and national resources and services (social, medical and insurance, etc.) for the patient. 
  • Coordinate and arrange further diagnostic evaluations, genetic testing, and referrals to other specialties, physicians and agencies, follow-up appointments, social services or research testing. Act as patient advocate. 
  • Respond to telephone inquiries about specific disorders, testing or referrals from internal or external health care providers. 
  • For inpatient consults, review the medical chart, obtain family history, formulate differential diagnosis, present information and possible differential diagnoses to M.D. or Ph.D. geneticist. Discuss the information with the requesting nurse practitioner or physician, counsel family, and coordinate testing and follow-up. 
  • Develop and update protocols and procedures for the HFH Genetics Clinic. 
  • Assist HFHS cytogenetics laboratory with communicating information and results with various physicians and agencies. 
  • Promote access to genetic services through community outreach services at field clinics throughout the state. 
Teaching responsibilities 
  • Assists in the instruction and supervision of genetic counseling students and medical interns/residents. Facilitate group discussion for medical students and interns/residents. 
  • Design patient education materials. 
  • Prepare and present educational programs for physicians, allied health care personnel and lay groups. 
  • Act as liaisons and consultants at multidisciplinary meetings in other departments. 
  • Participate in weekly clinic conferences and grand rounds. 
Research responsibilities 
  • Critique and evaluate various clinical risks, benefits and limitations of patient participation in research. Facilitate patient participation in research studies. 
  • Determine and coordinate research genetic testing to confirm diagnoses. 
  • Critically analyze laboratory methodologies. Write clinical and research manuscripts for publication. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • Requires minimum of a Master of Science degree in genetic counseling from an accredited university graduate program. 
  • Must be an active candidate for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics. 
  • Previous experience in Genetics desirable, with counseling, diagnostic, and interpretation experience in the areas of prenatal diagnosis and MSAFP screening, amniocentesis, teratogen and dysmorphology. 
  • Requires sound knowledge of the State’s genetics network as well as other agencies that relate to the care of patients with genetic diseases.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Normal office environment with minimal exposure to noise, dust, or extreme temperatures.
  • Occasional mental/visual strain due to extensive reading, researching, and visual work.
