IT Enterprise Application Architect - Detroit
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The IT Enterprise Applications Architect is responsible for defining the current applications architecture environment and reference architecture, and laying out the future state architecture. This individual will be responsible for participating in the overall design, implementation, training, documentation, operation and support of Epic, Business Systems, Clinical/Departmental, Revenue Cycle, Collaboration Solutions, Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), and Integration/Interface applications and tools as well as other IT or Partner IT applications, tools, technologies, and other services. This includes contributing to the planning, design, implementation and optimization of the applications within and across portfolios. It also includes developing an understanding of other applications to enable a broader system approach to solution development, troubleshooting, impact assessment, and training.
The Enterprise Applications Architect takes general direction from the Director, EDW or a designee and has a matrix reporting relationship to the Enterprise Architecture team. The Architect may in some instances also serve as an Applications liaison to their associated clinical or business departments throughout the system. This includes, but is not limited to, the assessment of optimization efforts to meet system goals including patient safety/quality of care, revenue capture and efficient operations. The Architect performs these activities following HFHS standards and processes. In conjunction with other areas in IT, takes the lead on developing standards, policies, and procedures that govern the Applications environment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Enterprise Applications Architect is a technical resource who supports application staff in the planning, design/build, test, implementation, support, and operational needs of the organization:

Assembles and leads cross functional teams to assess the impact of new requests, and related estimated work effort and resource requirements.

Leads overall design and architecture of cross functional solutions, in partnership with operations and other stakeholders, to ensure integration and alignment of build, process design, workflows, training and deployment.

Troubleshoots technical problems and conducts analyses for efficient program/application solutions which support business processes, functional and technical requirements.

Coordinates solutions and planning with other IT teams; collaborates with analysts and operational areas to identify and resolve workflow impacts.

Identifies inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement within application design and recommends solutions.

Provides knowledge leadership on a portfolio of applications, staying abreast of developments on new technologies, organizing cross functional training for application staff, and deepening knowledge of the interdependency between applications.

Communicates status of work in progress to project team, requestor, Director or VP.

May act as the Applications liaison to associated departments and constituencies throughout the Health System. Understands core system processes and interdependencies across applications. Researches trends and best practices in relation to healthcare application software, application software development, and technologies. Provides organizational leadership with respect to Business, Clinical/Departmental, Collaboration Solutions, EDW and Integration applications.

Participates in leadership of overall direction, policies, procedures and standards of application environment.

Participates actively in key meetings with Operational Leaders to develop best practice processes.

May represent application team on other various Governance Advisory Councils and organizational teams.

Promotes workflow analysis and redesign associated with implementation and optimization of system applications. Advises staff on the implementation of processes that improve efficiency with the adoption of the software.

Recommends process and workflow configurations and/or changes to align with best practices, standardization, integration needs/requirements, compliance and/or regulatory policies.

Uses human factors and error proofing concepts whenever possible to improve safety and efficiency.

Works effectively as part of a team in resolving issues escalated through the Help Desk in a timely manner. Supports teams in investigating, testing, and resolving problems related to applications. Identifies, escalates and resolves issues that impact infrastructure and application performance.

Leads, promotes, develops and adheres to system standards, and best practices.

Collaborates across the Applications team to develop unified approaches and standard work. Collaborates with team to promote re-use and develop consistent technical build, implementation and support processes.

Assists in root cause analyses led by problem managers to identify potential improvement opportunities.

Provides input on standards, best practices, and process improvements. Input may be, but not limited to best clinical and /or business process and workflows.

Supports proofs of concepts for new technology, processes, and/or workflows.

Implements applications according to requirements, specifications and compliance/regulatory standards.

Collaborates with vendor partners and contractors.

Works with other Managers and the IT Leadership team to lead issue resolution while maintaining HFHS Standards of Excellence.

Effectively manages conflict and works together with team members, colleagues, and other leaders. Prepares, shares, and presents effectively. Oversees, leads, communicates, presents, influences and utilizes reasoning skills to earn support of colleagues, and IT Leaders and the Operational leadership team.

Provides input and subject matter expertise to support technology planning

Works with IT, Project Helios and Operations management to ensure systems are in line with overall policies, standards, processes, and overall workflows.

Stays current with vendor capabilities and provides input into software/system implementation strategies and plans.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science or related field required, Master’s Degree preferred. Five (5) years required, eight (8) years preferred of strong experience in leadership or technical skill.

Demonstrated experience in a leadership role on a major project or change management effort.

Must be able to understand the overall healthcare business including Clinical/Inpatient Quality, Revenue cycle, Population Health Management, Finance and Operations to support system wide performance improvement initiatives and handle related performance analytics projects

Proven track record in interacting with diverse business customers and ability to understand their unique needs

Ability to assign, guide, and monitor the work of others regardless of the reporting relationship (direct, project, indirect)

Excellent Strategic Thinker; possess ability to provide thoughtful leadership to develop creative solutions for complex business and technical problems

Excellent verbal and writing skills. Able to develop and present complex material effectively to a variety of audiences – technical and non-technical, staff, management and leadership

Strong knowledge of state-of-the art software engineering approaches in software architecture, design, build, testing, debugging problems, and ongoing technical support. Able to articulate previous examples of workflows and processes associated with previous IT experience.

Certification in Enterprise Architecture Frameworks such as TOGAF, and in IT Service Management frameworks such as ITIL are preferred.

Strong knowledge/experience in clinical workflows and processes. Able to articulate previous examples of workflows and processes associated with clinical experience integrated with IT solutions.

Revenue experience is preferred including:

Specific knowledge of one or more of the following: bed management, registration, scheduling, revenue cycle reports, professional billing, hospital billing, medical records or coding. Additionally must be able to articulate revenue cycle workflows and processes for one or more of the above areas with a focus on IT integrated solutions.
