GENERAL SUMMARY:

 

Directly coordinates, oversees and controls the flow of medical record coded information required of the hospital and ambulatory sites for billing/reimbursement purposes. The Coding Coordinator of Quality & Education is responsible for the completeness, accuracy, quality and timely submission of all medical data and supporting documentation for inpatient discharges and outpatient encounters. Acts as the departmental liaison to the activities in the coding reimbursement process. Assesses, designs and evaluates educational programs and processes that are aimed at improving the quality of documentation practices for Henry Ford Health System. Serves as an educational resource for providers and/or coding staff relating to coding and documentation.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for evaluating and conducting coding education in compliance with industry coding standards to physicians, non-physician practitioners and ancillary staff.
  • Responsible for promoting improvements in documentation practices for assigned specialties through frequent interaction with providers.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of coding education materials and process improvement plans.
  • Required to foster positive interactions with the providers and staff during the educational process.
  • Involved with health system quality and core measure initiatives as they relate to documentation.
  • Available at all times to investigate and respond to coding staff questions.
  • Collaborates with physicians to assist in making sure documentation is complete, accurate and timely allowing accurate coding of the diagnoses and services performed.
  • Oversees and regularly reports to department management on the status of departmental financial objectives and physician productivity as they relate to coding.
  • Monitors the availability, accuracy and quality of all supporting medical documentation required for billing purposes and ensures that all necessary documentation is submitted on a timely basis.
  • Responds to inquiries and concerns expressed by physicians and ancillary departments regarding coding.
  • Assists management in preparations for coding validation audits as needed.
  • Assists in preparation and oversight for coding related third party payor appeals.
  • Responsible to maintain current knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other coding policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Business, Healthcare Administration or Medical Record Sciences preferred.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, disease processes, medical terminology, pharmacology, and coding systems.
  • Minimum of three years coding experience, specialty coding experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), CPC, or CCS certification required.
